iGenes is a DNA test that identifies how your unique genetic profile may impact your body’s response to certain medications. The test looks at the genes responsible for processing medications, and the results can help your doctor decide which medication and doses may work best for you. In addition, the iGenes results will help you avoid medications which may potentially cause severe reactions to you.

This personalized approach helps your doctor avoid the trial and error approach to medication and allows you to get on the right medication at the right dose and get you on the path to well sooner.

The iGenes test is performed with a painless buccal cell sample done by your doctor. The swabs are then sent to our genetic testing laboratory to determine characteristics of your unique drug-processing genes.

1) What is Pharmacogenomics?

Pharmacogenomics is the study of how individual people respond to drugs based on their genetic makeup.

2) How do I order the iGenes test?
You will need to get a prescription from your doctor. Feel free to print out our patient brochure and provide your doctor with our information. If you would like us to refer you to our list of panel doctors, please call us at 2210-9588

3) Will the same medicine that worked for someone I’m related to (mom/dad/sister/brother) work for me?
Not necessarily. Each person has a unique set of genes and genetic responses to medications. You may share genetic similarities with your relatives, but each of you has a different genetic makeup and metabolism. Your genes influence the way your body may respond to a specific medication. So a medication that works for your relative may not necessarily work for you.

4) How do my genes affect which medication may work for me?
Your genes may affect the way medications work in your body—some medications could work better with your unique genetic profile and some medicines might not work at all for you. Your genes also can affect how quickly your body breaks down (metabolizes) medicine and gets medicine into your bloodstream.

For example, codeine can be an effective painkiller for some people. However, for about 10 percent of people, it has no effect whatsoever (Source: National Institutes of Health).

When a medication doesn’t work with your genes, you may not get the relief you need and you may have unwanted side effects. By gathering information about your genetic profile, you and your doctor may be better informed in making your treatment selection. Medications that align well with your genes may work better and with fewer side effects.

5) How could iGenes help me?
iGenes gives your doctor important information to help plan your treatment. iGenes is designed to help your doctor get you on the right medicine faster with fewer unwanted side effects.

iGenes analyzes your genes and then matches the information about your genes to a list of medications that may be available for your condition. The report provides information to your doctor about which medications may work better with your genes and how your body might process those medications. That gives your doctor additional insight to help select the medications that may work best for you.

6) What is the test like? Is it invasive?
The test is easy to administer and takes about 2 minutes for sample collection. Sample containing your DNA is collected using a simple buccal swab. Your doctor will then send your sample to our ISO accredited genetic clinical laboratory for analyzed.

7) How long will it take to get the results?
Once we received your sample, we will complete the test analysis and send a report to your doctor within 10 business days.

8) Will my doctor share the results with me?

Yes, you and your doctor will go through the iGenes results together. On this website, you can find a lot of helpful information about genes, pharmacogenomics and the iGenes test.

9) How will my doctor use the information from iGenes to treat me?
The report is one piece of information that your doctor can use to create an individualized treatment plan for you. Your doctor will use the report to help guide the selection of the medication for you. With iGenes, your doctor can identify which medications may be more effective and may be less likely to have unwanted side effects.

10) If my relative (mom/dad/sister/brother) had an iGenes test, can my doctor use those results to treat me?
No. Each person has a unique combination of genes that could affect how he or she may react to certain medications. You will need to have your own iGenes test done.

11) Are the results of my iGenes report confidential?
Yes. iGenes takes privacy and security very seriously. That’s why we analyze all iGenes tests at our own accredited lab, so we can ensure the quality and security of your test.  Your genetic information is private and protected through the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data of Hong Kong that ensure the security of your personal and genetic information.
