What is an allergy?
The term ‘allergy’ is used to describe the abnormal response of the immune system to usually harmless foreign substances. Normally, the immune system only initiates an immune response against harmful substances such as viruses and bacteria to protect us. However, in ’allergic’ individuals, the immune system treats the substances that are not harmful to most people as invaders (known as allergens) and over-reacts to them by activating the immune response. This results in various symptoms from mild discomfort to severe distress.
What is IgE’s role in allergy?
There are different types of allergy reactions, varied by immunological mechanisms. The most well-known allergy is immediate hypersensitivity, and Immunoglobulin E (IgE) plays a critical role. IgE is a type of antibodies produced by the immune system. When an ‘allergic’ person is exposed to an allergen for the first time, the immune system will make and release a large amount of IgE antibodies specific to that allergen, part of which are bound to the surface of mast cells. If the individual is exposed to the same allergen again, the allergen binds to its specific IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and triggers the rapid release of histamine and other mediators, which causes various symptoms.
