Nagasaki University 5-ALA experiment Report Nagasaki University conducted SARS-CoV-2 infection experiments on Omicron mutant strains in the laboratory and reported the in vitro antiviral effect of 5-ALA on this mutant strain as a potential COVID-19 treatment and preventive measure. This research was accepted by the international journal Tropical Medicine and Health on April 8, 2022. The findings suggest that 5-ALA may be used as an antiviral drug candidate to treat patients infected with Omicron variants. |

U.S. National Library of Medicine-National Center for Biotechnology Information Research Report 5-ALA is a naturally occurring amino acid that has been used for a variety of purposes, including as an anti-cancer therapy and as a dietary supplement, due to its high bioavailability. In this study, we demonstrate that 5-ALA treatment can effectively inhibit infection by SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, in cell culture. This antiviral effect was detectable in both human and non-human cells without significant cytotoxicity. Therefore, 5-ALA deserves further investigation as an antiviral drug candidate for COVID-19. |
