Swindon Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) Vaccine (1 dose)

People who should receive the MMR vaccine:

• Women planning to pregnancy (Generally, women should avoid pregnancy for 3 months after vaccination)
• Frontline staff
• People travelling abroad soon
• People who have not been vaccinated or are unsure of their vaccination history

People who should not receive or should postpone the vaccination

• Severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of Measles, Mumps, and Rubella vaccine
• Severe allergic reaction to gelatin or certain antibiotics
• Suffering from cancer
• Severe immunosuppression caused by disease or treatment (e.g., patients receiving anti-cancer treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or taking medications that lower immunity such as high-dose steroids)
• Currently having a fever or taking antibiotics
• Long-term use of steroids
• Suffering from immune system diseases
• Pregnant women (pregnancy should be avoided for three months after vaccination)
• Received a blood transfusion, other blood products, or immunoglobulins within the past 11 months
• Received any live vaccine within the past 4 weeks

Measles

Symptoms include fatigue, fever, cough, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and white spots inside the mouth. After 3 to 7 days, a red rash appears on the face and gradually spreads across the whole body. Potential complications include middle ear infection, pneumonia, bronchitis, and encephalitis. Severe cases can be fatal.

Mumps

Symptoms include fever and painful swelling of one or both salivary glands. Patients may develop meningitis or hearing loss. Infection during puberty can cause complications such as orchitis (testis inflammation) or oophoritis (ovary inflammation), which may affect fertility.

Rubella

Symptoms are generally mild. They include fever, headache, rash, and swollen lymph nodes behind the ears and in the neck. It can sometimes be completely asymptomatic. Complications include arthritis, thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), and encephalitis.

Rubella can cause anomalies in a developing fetus. If a pregnant woman is infected during the first three months of pregnancy, the baby may be born with Congenital Rubella Syndrome. Symptoms include deafness, blindness, heart defects, and intellectual disability.
