The ApexHealth Refractive Surgery Genetic Test is suitable for individuals preparing for laser vision correction surgery (including SMILE/ LASIK) or those with a family history of eye disease who require risk assessment. This test targets 5 common TGFBI gene variants for the early detection of Corneal Dystrophy risk.
Understanding the Risk: Corneal Dystrophy
There is an inherited eye condition called Corneal Dystrophy. It often shows no symptoms in its early stages, and traditional eye examinations may not detect it. Research indicates that for individuals carrying specific gene variants, such as those in the TGFBI gene, undergoing SMILE or LASIK laser vision correction can actually trigger or accelerate the progression of this condition. This can cause snowflake-like white deposits to accumulate on the cornea, leading to blurry vision. In severe cases, this can result in permanent, irreversible vision damage.
What is the TGFBI gene?
The TGFBI gene is responsible for producing a protein that acts like a kind of “glue” or adhesive in the cornea. This protein helps maintain the normal, orderly arrangement of proteins in the cornea so that it remains transparent.
However, if this gene has a “mistake” (i.e., a mutation), some proteins in the cornea cannot arrange themselves properly. As a result, these proteins become insoluble in water and start to accumulate in the cornea. Over time, this causes the cornea to become increasingly cloudy, leading to a gradual decline in vision.
