Alcohol Metabolism & Your Genes: ADH1B and ALDH2
Your body's ability to process alcohol is closely linked to variations in the ADH1B and ALDH2 genes.
If you carry certain variants in these genes, you may experience heightened sensitivity to alcohol — including the classic facial flushing, rapid heartbeat, nausea, and severe hangovers even after just a small amount.
For those with these genetic traits who also have a tendency to drink heavily, the buildup of toxic acetaldehyde places extra strain on the liver — significantly increasing the long-term risk of liver diseases.
