A cataract is when the eye’s lens becomes cloudy due to aging or damage, affecting vision. Common causes include aging, long-term UV exposure, diabetes, prolonged steroid use, and eye injuries. Unhealthy habits like smoking or poor nutrition can also increase risk. As the lens loses clarity, symptoms such as blurred vision and sensitivity to light may occur, so early check-up and treatment are important.
The main early signs of cataracts are as follows:
- Blurred vision: Things appear as if they are seen through a veil, always seeming hazy.
- Shadows: Dot-like or patchy shadows that appear in front of the eyes and whose location and shape remain unchanged.
- Diplopia or polyopia: Seeing double or even multiple images of a single object.
- Changes in color vision: Decreased color discrimination; originally vibrant colors become dull and yellowish, as if a brown filter has been applied to the eyes.
